The key element of inspiration is surprise. Technique can only take you so far. There is a moment when something starts to happen as you press forward against resistance, a nudge on the edge of your awareness that asks you to risk a turn or leap. It scares you to abandon the plan. You know that quitting halfway is a sure road to failure. So you press on, and each step leads you further into the conventional and pedestrian. And then you abandon hope but don't abandon your canvas. You take the leap, knowing you could fall flat. And then an inner wind lifts you out of yourself and suddenly everything falls just right.
